Tai O is a charming fishing village near Hong Kong, which retains a flavor of “old China.”  The people live in stilt houses, on canals that flow into the larger waters of the harbor.

We stayed there for three days and nights, exploring the back alleys, the markets, and walked with all the pedestrians around the town and nearby hills.  We especially enjoyed Veronica and her B&B.  Veronica set us up with a tofu pudding workshop, where we ground soft soybeans and then ate some pudding.  It was delicious!

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and kind.  She suggested bakeries, restaurants, and other bits of information that gave us insight into Tai O and its history.  The people are friendly, and I loved looking out our window and watching the bicyclists go by, with their little “shopping carts” attached to the bicycles.  We poked our heads into shops where people played mahjong, and we ate in small, local restaurants, where the fish was fresh and the food spicy and delicious.
